Designed for 1 on 1 duels,
this map is inspired by The
one and only Penrose
Triangle, an infinitely
spiraling Prism.
My infatuation with
abstract geometry
compelled me to translate
the impossible qualities of
the Penrose Triangle into
a 3 dimensional space.
My goal was to start with a
complex 3 dimensional shape,
and then simply 'make it work'
within the context of an FPS Arena.

This proved to be a challenge for
several reasons, one of which being;
the layers of vertical overlap creating
stalemates between players on top of eachother.
How i solved this problem was to gradually tighten up
the floor space as players moved ever higher up the prism.
This allowed players to interact with each other through the layers,
while also balancing the distribution of power by making it more
difficult for players on top, to maintain their height advantage.

When a player reaches the
pinnacle of the spiraling prism,
they can then drop down to grab an
Overshield power up, resetting their
position at the bottom of the Prism
This feature combines the symbolic
infinity of the Penrose in complete
synchronization with how the players
actually experience the map. A never
ending stair case full of possibilities.
Penrose was also the first map that was recreated in more professional 3d software. You can see in these examples how Penrose was translated in Unity using the native Probuilder tool. The 30 degree angle of the main three lanes and the 5 degree angle of the gradually inclining floors and walls proved a challenge to recreate in engine due to the the grid-like nature of 3d software. In the end I overcame the obstacles and was able to recreate Penrose in 1:1 scale.
